What is Philately? The wonderful world of Philately, Philately Collector's Pride.
Philately is the syustmatic study and collection of postage stamps. It is a hobby practised the world over, and its benefits to the serious collecto of postage stamps are invaluable. These beautiful miniature reproductions, found on the face of envelopes transmitted across the globe by the postal services, are a window in to the most amazing facets of the countries they represent. They open a window to a broad spectrum of knowledge that covers geat personalities, flora and fauna, historical sites and landmarks. The habit of collecting stamps is often engendered in the very young, and provides the collector with a distict advantage over general knowledge about the world -its geography, its history, its personalities and of the creatures that inhabit it.
Rather than a mere hobby, philately or stamp collection is a delightful practice that sharpens and satisfies asesthetic taste. It cultivates a meticulous and focussed attention to the details of stamps belongings to different countries of different civilisations, arts, cultures, flora, and fauna. Philatelists are of two kinds- one collecting used stamps and other collecting unsual or mint stamps. To begin with, there is no harm in collecting used stamps.
Many philatelists collect stamps according to the selection of choice called 'Thematic Collection' that would be under the themes, such as war heroes, monuments, cultues, flowers, etc- anything of thier interest. The bottom line of this method is hat the collection can unfold an aspect of a theme like a historical chronology, family of species, etc.
However, the method of thematic collection may limit collection to a single subject or country. So, opting for topics that could cover vast areas of concern will be a wise decision for the beginners. Every year, more than 200 countries produce new stamps covering all subjects which are far beyond our expectation. That is why the choice of topics is not a problem in philately.

Many people consider postal mails are major sources of postal stamps. But these days in Urban and semi-urban areas, traditional postal mail is more or less suppressed by e-mail. It does not mean that the postal service is dead and stamps are extinct. There are certain provisions where e-mail could not challenge postal mail. Parcel and cargo are some instances. And for every hardcore philatelists, the Philatelic Bereaux, Post office counters, and Philatelic Deposit Account Schemes are still alive and kicking to avail all kinds of stamps whether commemorative or definitive.
